The Dangers of Flood Water

6/23/2022 (Permalink)

We’ve seen flood water on TV. It’s dark and muddy. It has an odor and is dangerous. It can carry contaminants that can make you sick. So, if flood waters get into your Pasadena property, make sure you have it removed by professionals.

Muddy floods include larger pebbles and sand particles that are usually produced by agriculture land. Flood waters look dark because of the presence of suspended solids. The water isn't pure or "clean", so it loses its transparency. Debris in the water absorbs light. The light that you would normally see passing through and reflecting simply gets absorbed. Often, though, this effect is more of a graying or muddiness type of appearance.

The danger of flood waters lies in the contaminants. Click here to read Flood Waters or Standing Waters from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

SERVPRO of Pasadena/Gibson Island/Lake Shore considered muddy flood waters category 3 water. This water is considered emergency service. Property Managers often call us into the Lake Shore area when there is any type of flooding.

Where is this Water Coming From?

6/21/2022 (Permalink)

We get these calls all the time. Help! There’s water all over my basement. Or, there’s water coming from my ceiling. It doesn’t matter if it’s 1:00 in the afternoon or 1:00 in the morning, but water causes damage to your property when it wants to, especially in Pasadena, Maryland.

SERVPRO of Pasadena/Gibson Island/Lake Shore sees water damage mostly from:

  • Ice-Maker Water Line. This is the water line that connects to your refrigerator to provide cold water and ice.
  • Toilet. Whether it’s a sewage backup or broken pipe, we often get calls to clean dirty water from bathrooms.
  • Storm. Basement sump pumps often experience problems during rain, thunderstorms, and hurricanes.
  • Roof. Most homeowners don’t know they have problems with their roof until water is coming from their ceiling.

The first step to resolving the water problem is to determine what is causing the intrusion. Call us at (410) 255-1110, 24 hours a day/7 days a week. We will help you stop the flow of water immediately, and SERVPRO of Pasadena/Gibson Island/Lake Shore can mitigate and restore your property. We will make it "Like it never even happened."

What to do when Water Damage Occurs

1/20/2022 (Permalink)

The beginning of 2022 has kicked off with frigid temperatures and plenty of precipitation. We have seen a spike in water damage losses in Pasadena recently. Water damage can be the most common and most costly loss a homeowner can experience. The damage water can cause to your home may come as a surprise. Now is the time for Pasadena homeowners to take preventative measures to protect their property.

The first thing a homeowner should do before the freezing temperatures arrive is disconnect all hoses connected to the house and shut off the exterior water supply. As an additional precaution, homeowners should always check or monitor the water pipes located in the attic, garage, basement, and crawl space. These areas of the home often have exposed pipes that can freeze on colder nights and windier days. It is also important to know where your shut off valve is in your home as well.

Should a water incident occur in your business, remove excess water, if possible, remove and prop up any wet upholstery cushions for even driving and place aluminum foil or wood blocks under furniture legs. These few steps can be the difference in preventing further damage to your home and its contents.

Don't Be a Victim of Ice Dams

12/16/2021 (Permalink)

Winter weather can often be unpredictable and bring unforeseen hazards. One of these hazards we see most often that heavily affects homeowners is ice dams. What is an ice dam? An ice dam is a ridge of ice that forms at the edge of a roof that impedes melting snow from draining off the roof. This water is backed up by the dam and cannot flow properly through the gutters. Because of this, the water can leak back into the home can cause damage to walls, ceilings, insulation and more.

This accumulation of water can create moisture in your home. Moisture can lead to mold growth, creating a larger concern for your home. Ice dams can also lead to wet and settled insulation, stained ceilings and walls, paint deterioration, drooping ceilings, jammed doors and so much more. An extensive list of these problems can lead to costly repairs.

Removing ice and snow from your roof is a dangerous job. Avoid injury by hiring a professional to remove snow and ice from the roof. Get the problem fixed before expensive repairs come into play.

If you notice an ice dam forming or see water damage in your home, contact your insurance agent to see if it is covered under your insurance policy.

Where Did This Water Come From?

10/19/2021 (Permalink)

Some of our most common calls are from someone asking for help because their basement has flooded over or because there is water coming from their ceiling. Whether it’s 1:00 in the morning or 1:00 in the afternoon, SERVPRO of Pasadena/Gibson Island/Lake Shore is here to help restore your property if it has been damaged by water.

The most common causes of water damage are from:

  • Ice-maker water line – this is the line that connects to your refrigerator to provide cold water and ice. If this line breaks or is damaged, it could lead to unforeseen water damage behind and under your fridge.
  • Toilet – Whether it is a sewage backup or a broken pipe, we often get calls to clean dirty water from bathrooms.
  • Storm – basement sump pump often during rain, thunderstorms and hurricanes. In the instance of a power outage, the sump pump will automatically shut off and this could lead to flooding.
  • Roof – Most homeowners do not know they have a problem with their roof until water is draining from their ceiling. Check your gutters and shingles for any signs of damage.

Flooded Basement? No Problem

10/19/2021 (Permalink)

A basement can flood at any time, although flooding most often occurs during heavy rainfall. Basements are naturally prone to flooding because they are the lowest level of the building of course. This, combined with being built partly or entirely below ground level, makes basements extremely susceptible to flooding. There are several reasons why your Pasadena basement could flood, including:

  • A blocked of failed sewer lateral pipe
  • Heavy rain that causes water to collect and pool around your home
  • Storm sewer backup
  • Foundation drainage failure
  • Water supply-line break or hot-water tank failure

If flood water is not handled quickly and properly, it can jeopardize your health and safety and cause serious damage to your home’s structure and foundation. Remember, the longer you wait, the graver the situation becomes. If you or someone you know has a flooded basement, contact SERVPRO of Pasadena at 410-255-1110 and our trained professionals will be there to make it look “Like it never even happened.”

Prepare Your Pipes for Winter

1/22/2020 (Permalink)

pipe with ice Frozen Pipe

SERVPRO of Pasadena/Gibson Island/Lake Shore wants to help you prepare your property to prevent any water damage. Here are some simple tips to keep water flowing the way it should through the winter months.

Know the location of the water shut off valve.

If you were to have a major incident with your home’s plumbing this is the number one thing to know. Typically, shut off valves are outside about 4 feet from your home and can be hidden beneath landscape. Occasionally, it can be beside the water meter. It is crucial to know where the shut off valve is in case you have a pipe burst and need to cut off the water supply to your home to prevent further damage.

Turn off outside spigots to prevent them from freezing.

Did you know the average homeowner spends $10,000 for a pipe rupture? Having an emergency plumber fix the plumbing, and then, SERVPRO of Pasadena/Gibson Island/Lake Shore dry your home and replace flooring, walls etc. is a huge expense. Take a few minutes and disconnect garden hoses from the spigot and purchase a cover from your local hardware store to protect the outdoor spigots. Plumbing pipes, like all materials, deteriorate overtime. Along comes old man winter, and the water in that thin pipe freezes and burst. As it begins to thaw you are left with a plumbing emergency.

Look for pipes in uninsulated areas of your home.

Pipes running on the outside edge of your home’s exterior are most susceptible to freezing. They should be covered with towels or foam to protect them from cold temperatures. Allowing your faucets to drip water slowly to encourage water flow is another good winter weather tip.

Preparation is the key to make it through any type of disaster, whether it is a small water leak or a ruptured pipe. Review these tips with everyone in your home to ensure safe water flow throughout your property.

water damage and mold inside a wall Water Damage

Water damage can quickly cause mold and bacteria growth. Mold can grow in as little as 24 to 48 hours. Stop mold growth, by identifying water damage fast. Here are some simple tips to help you identify water damage:

Identifying water in walls and ceilings may be obvious sometimes. However, it can be easy to overlook the most common signs. The early warning signs of water damage are peeling or bubbling paint or wallpaper. As more water comes into the property, walls and floors become bloated or swollen and may even warp. In severe cases, walls and ceilings may feel spongy to the touch.

You may be able to see water spots on walls and ceilings. Stains and possible mold are other ways to identify water damage.

Floors and carpets often hide water when the water is located in a corner. Many property owners often overlook the corner when looking for water damage. Floors can obviously be seen as wet, but carpet can hide water more easily. If the carpet feels spongy or soggy, you need to identify the source of that water.

Identifying water quickly is the best way to reduce damage. SERVPRO of Pasadena/Gibson Island/Lake Shore usually gets a call for mold damage after water was undetected by a slow leak. Protect your property. Identify Water Damage Fast!
