Winter weather can often be unpredictable and bring unforeseen hazards. One of these hazards we see most often that heavily affects homeowners is ice dams. What is an ice dam? An ice dam is a ridge of ice that forms at the edge of a roof that impedes melting snow from draining off the roof. This water is backed up by the dam and cannot flow properly through the gutters. Because of this, the water can leak back into the home can cause damage to walls, ceilings, insulation and more.
This accumulation of water can create moisture in your home. Moisture can lead to mold growth, creating a larger concern for your home. Ice dams can also lead to wet and settled insulation, stained ceilings and walls, paint deterioration, drooping ceilings, jammed doors and so much more. An extensive list of these problems can lead to costly repairs.
Removing ice and snow from your roof is a dangerous job. Avoid injury by hiring a professional to remove snow and ice from the roof. Get the problem fixed before expensive repairs come into play.
If you notice an ice dam forming or see water damage in your home, contact your insurance agent to see if it is covered under your insurance policy.
